Move and Rename Bookmark Folders at DianHuaDictionary.com

You no longer have to wait for the next version of DianHua Dictionary to move and/or rename your Bookmark Folders.  That function is now available on DianHuaDictionary.com.  Though I am working on adding it to DianHua Dictionary, the chosen feature-set for the next release is proving time-consuming.  As a result, I wanted users who are using DianHua Dictionary heavily for studying to be able to reorganize Bookmarks in the interim.

To access the feature, login to DianHuaDictionary.com, click Bookmarks from the left Menu, and navigate to the folder you want to move.  Near the top of the page, you will see a drop-down box for selecting the new parent folder (leave this to the existing folder if you just want to rename a folder).  The entry field can be used to rename the folder as needed whether or not a new parent folder is selected.  Click Move to complete the operation.

Once you have moved or renamed a Bookmark Folder, use the Sync function in DianHua Dictionary on your iPhone or iPod touch to bring the changes from the web site to your device.

Great feature - very handy :)
Like I said on another post, it would be nice to
be able to move words around from folder to folder via the website and to share
bookmarks with others, e.g. class lists or bookmarks for menu items when in a
restaurant.

Keep up the great work!
Philipp  - manage / delete bookmarks   |2010-02-21 13:31:22
How do you delete bookmarks?

I am desperate finding a way to delete or
reorganize my bookmarks on the iphone or on dianhuadictionary.com.

Pls help.

Cheers,
Philipp
Jason   |2010-03-01 17:12:08
I answered Philipp's questions by e-mail but thought I should post here as well.

Deleting bookmarks is done through the iPhone with the Edit button under the
bookmarks tab or by swiping left to right on a bookmark to reveal the Delete
button.

Right now, the server does not have a delete function, and the
move/rename function has been temporarily disabled pending the bug that is
causing sync problems for everyone.
Chris   |2010-03-26 09:48:32
Hi,

Just wondering... do you have an estimate on when moving bookmark folders
will be back online yet? When I created new folders in the iPhone app, it placed
each folder in the previous one, so I have a very deep folder structure, instead
of a very broad one! :-)

thanks
Jason   |2010-03-31 21:42:21
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I enabled the move function again this
afternoon. The main bug has been fixed, but it's possible there could be some
more unusual sync interactions. Let me know if you run into any trouble.
brice richard  - the sync option does not work   |2010-02-28 16:45:15
I have used the website to re-shuffle my bookmarks. But the sync function in the
ipod touch doesn't work. It says "an error occurred communicating with
DianHuaDictionary.com. Any other way we can re-organize the bookmarks ? This is
really important !
Jason   |2010-03-01 17:09:43
I need the e-mail address you used to create your account so I can evaluate the
sync problem you're experiencing. You can e-mail the support address or submit
the support form.
Jack   |2010-03-05 03:31:05
I am also having problem with syncing to dianhuadictionary.com.

First off, I
love your program, I use it everyday and can't wait to have more control over my
bookmarks!
Eugene   |2010-03-23 02:42:33
I have this error message "No bookmarks were found in selected folders"
But i have created in the bookmark folder
Jason   |2010-03-23 13:15:51
I ran into the error once during development when I did, in fact, have bookmarks
in the system. After restarting the application to debug the problem, I
couldn't replicate it. So, my guess is that if you exit and go back into the
system, it will work.
Jason   |2010-03-31 21:40:24
Just a quick note to say I found the problem. A database upgrade wasn't being
done on new installations until the second time the application was started.
It's corrected in DH Audio, and it will be fixed in the next DianHua Dictionary
release.
Michael Vlotman   |2010-04-18 02:35:53
Hi Jason

I love your app. I use many Chinese dictionaries including Pleco,
KCDict and many others but I love the simplicity of your app. What I really love
is being able to practice my vocab on the ipod. Just one thing. due to the lack
of multitasking of Ipod and the small keyboard, I would like to know if it
were possible for a web based DianHua sometime in the future?
Jason   |2010-04-18 21:19:49
Let me give it some thought. I haven't really planned to offer web-based tools,
but with DianHuaDictionary.com already in place, it might not be all that time
consuming.
John  - Wonderful app!   |2010-04-29 22:33:03
Your Dian Hua app is one of the best that I have seen! Congratulations on your
outstanding work!

Here is a silly question, and I've looked through your site
in case it was answered somewhere else but I didn't find it. Due to my location
where I live, AT&T isn't available - hence the iPhone isn't an option for me.
Has there been any consideration of offering this app on the Andriod OS? I
realize that it is not a simple port, but wow, this is so much better than what
is available I would really use this app over anything else!

Thanks,

John
Jason Koeninger   |2010-05-03 03:56:00
Android is under consideration. I'll be doing an unrelated project on Android
in the coming weeks, and if I like what I see, I will consider an Android
port.

As for other platforms, my interest in Blackberry dropped dramatically
after writing an app for that platform.
Kerry L Blanchard  - Sync issue   |2010-06-05 08:51:20
I am not able to sync my bookmarks from the website to my iPhone. The sync seems
to go alright until about half bar, then locks for a short while, then I get the
Sync error dialogue box. Nothing is changed in my folder structure. Any advice?
Thanks,
Jason   |2010-06-08 19:20:48
Will you e-mail me at the support address or fill out the support form? I need
to have your e-mail address to check the account. Sorry for the trouble, but I
should be able to get it sorted quickly.
Minh Vu   |2010-06-09 23:01:09
You're the man. I like this software so much. You're instructions are kind of
useless because you're software is so easy to use.

Kim  - Issues with folder deleting & moving     |2010-07-08 03:14:11
When adding folders to phone I didn' realize I was making more subfolders. I
wanted to move subfolders around, but created more folders. How can I wipe out
the my folders on the DianHua website so I can start fresh?

I don't want to
sync iphone until my data on website is empty.

There needs to be easier way
to delete and move folders on website.

There is no way to delete subfolder on
iphone. Otherwise like program.
Jason   |2010-07-31 04:01:07
You can delete folders in the iPhone application by swiping left to right in the
Bookmarks section.

On the website, you are completely correct. It needs a
delete feature.

If you need help with cleanup, please e-mail me at the support
address, and I'll be glad to help.

Hi I am currently looking for a chinese language learning app and I downloaded
the free version. However I seem to be hit with
"No bookmarks were found in
selected folders" problem
I have made an online account and sync it but its
still nor working. I have tried killing the background app in the OS and
restarting but still the same problem. I am running on IPhone4.

Any
suggestions?
Jason   |2010-10-14 20:08:20
It sounds like you did everything you needed to do to circumvent the problem.
The second time the program runs, it should stop giving you that
problem.

Sometimes in this case, the user hasn't created any bookmarks, but it
sounds like you have. If not, there's an article in the FAQ section that talks
about how to create bookmarks.
Patricia   |2010-10-20 09:26:32
Great product. I use it daily studying Chinese. It would be nice to have a
feature where we can configure our own vocabulary when making flash cards for
studying. I.e. when studying grammar, a lot of the phrases are split so when
you are making flashcards the phrase is split.
Jason   |2010-10-21 14:58:26
I've been saying this for a while so users may no longer believe me, but it
should make it into the next release. The hang-up is the sync system. It has
to be redesigned to support custom entries.
Mark  - information   |2010-11-20 12:30:53
Where is the information on how to use dianhua on the iphone? What is a
bookmark? How do you set up flashcards.
I bought the software and don't know
how to use it.
Jason   |2010-11-22 16:41:12
Bookmarks are used to make word lists in DianHua Dictionary. You can
bookmark an entry in the dictionary similar to bookmarking a web page
in Safari.

Once you have some bookmarks created, you create
Flashcards under the Study tab.

This page has some screen shots and a
more thorough walk-through:

Mark  - More questions   |2010-11-23 14:51:35
The software is generally good, and I do use it, but your glaring error is lack
of documentation on how to use the features. A simple description of functions
and procedures would be helpful. When studying flashcards, what does the X do,
the, ?, the check mark? I can guess, or try to figure it out, but that is
silly. Just tell me what they do.
Another big question is why you don't have a
feature that writes the character in the correct stroke order. This would allow
someone to actually learn how to write. Simply tracing the character is not
very useful, since the order is critical.
Which brings up the next big question;
why didn't you allow the character recognition software an option to detect the
shape of the drawn character, independent of the stroke order? I can draw a
perfect character using the wrong stroke order, and the software doesn't have a
clue what character it is. This is a huge problem, because if I new ho...
Jason   |2010-12-21 18:05:35
Good questions and advice, Mark.

As to the documentation, the software has
grown beyond the original set of features and deserves some instructions. We'll
fit that into the next release.

On the flashcards, the checkmark means you knew
the answer, the question means you weren't sure or were partially right (I often
know the pinyin but not the meaning or know the meaning but not the pinyin for
characters), and the X means you didn't know the answer. What you select
affects the ordering in the Difficulty algorithm.

We're working on finding a
good source for stroke order data. I'm hoping we'll be able to cover many of
the common characters in the next release.

The character recognition software
isn't actually part of the dictionary...it's part of the iPhone OS. Pleco is
the only company I know of offering their own character recognition, but I
believe it still depends on stroke order.

In my experience, it's tough to

Mark  - sync   |2010-12-21 03:30:13
I think your program is very good, and I use it all the time. However, when I
sync my bookmarks from my iphone, and then check at dianhua.com, there is no
update to the bookmarks or history on line. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.
Jason   |2010-12-21 17:54:12
Mark-

It appears you have two accounts, one ending in .net and the other in
.com. My guess is that's the source of the problem seeing information reflected
online. If that's not the case, let me know
Mark  - accounts   |2010-12-22 13:01:46
Jason,
You are right! I apologize, I made a typing mistake on the account for
.com. I only need one account, and that one should be the .net account. Can
you please delete the .com account, and I'll type correctly in the future.
Thanks.
Istvan   |2011-01-11 20:26:48
Hi Jason,

First of all Congratulations! you app is one of the best iphone
software I met. Absolutely easy to use, simplicity is marvelous. Nevertheless
there is a feature I miss so much. I just started to learn chinese recently.
From lesson to lesson I started to add my bookmarks, and finally I have piled up
100 words and just realized that it would be good to sort them into different
folders. So it would be a neccesary function to move around your words. Because
once you have 300+ words in a folder it would be tough to learn the new ones
with flashcards, on the other hand you might would like to make a folder as
well, where there are all of them. Please let me know if you have a recent plan
to let us move, and copy the words between folders?

Thanks

Istvan
Jason   |2011-01-31 17:33:25
Yes, we definitely need to be able to move words around. I'm working on it but
don't have a definite date for the next release.
Mark   |2011-01-31 04:54:37
Jason, I just wanted to thank you for setting up your system to allow backups on
line. My iphone had a problem and all my bookmarks were erased, over 2000.
Your system worked perfectly and restored them in a few minutes. Thanks!
Jason   |2011-01-31 17:34:13
Awesome news. I'm glad you didn't lose any of your hard work. This is the
primary reason I created a sync function.
fx  - pb to sync back to iphone   |2011-04-05 09:58:20
Dear Jason,
I should probably start by telling you how much I like dianhua dict.
It is my daily companion in the long journey to learn Mandarin and you've done a
terrific job with this app.

The reason I am posting today is because I have a
similar pb to someone else up there: I had to reinstall the app and had saved my
bookmarks, but once reinstalled I am unable to sync back. The sync utility seems
to hang half way through and dianhua is now completely empty (but I can still
see my bookmarks on the web app). Can you kindly help?
Jason   |2011-04-05 23:57:03
I'm starting to wonder if we're having some performance issues on our server
that are resulting in network timeouts. I will check into that side of things.
One thing you might confirm is that your phone isn't going to sleep in the
middle of the operation. DHD isn't background enabled so if the phone sleeps,
the operation will stop.
fx  - future developments   |2011-04-05 10:11:03
while I'm here I wanted to suggest a couple of future developments:
1- seems one
area of development that is quite natural is the handwriting : it would be nice
if the zoom on characters were animated in order to show the order and the
direction of the various strokes.
2- learning new words is great but it is even
better when you know how to use them. I guess this has more to do with the
definition themselves, but giving a couple of sentences using the word you're
looking at would be great
3- The other (and probably last piece of the puzzle
missing, especially given Chinese language structure) is to be able to record
and train common sentence patterns

looking forward to seeing/using new
functionnalities to this already incredible tool. Thx a lot to you Jason
Jason   |2011-04-05 23:59:01
Thank you for the recommendations. We are working on providing a small set of
character animations. I've also been looking at options for adding sample
sentences to the dictionary and learning tools. #3 is different. We have a lot
of study tool ideas we've been playing with so I'll file this away in case it's
something we can address.
